I must admit, when I first read this recipe I was a trivial aprehensive. I'm not a big fan of cabbage and neither are my kids. But, my husband found it and it reminded him of an former recipe his mom used to prepare. So nosotros tried it...and we absolutely loved it! Even the kids went back for more than. Next time I'll probably brand a trivial actress and so I can pack for luncheon the next day. Another great one to add to the recipe box!

Very good and unique sense of taste! I used 1 lb of regular pork sausage and ane/2 of maple pork sausage. Once mixed together, the philharmonic produced a very nice, subtle sweet gustation! As well, I used a pkg of colesalw cabbage and less red pepper flakes. I was skeptical near the sour cream but information technology really brings this dish together! Served in "Peppy'southward Pita Breadstuff" from this site and the way these were devoured, I'd wager that luncheon was a hit! Thanks for the bang-up idea Holly!

Peachy, fast and tasty recipe. But, sentinel the red pepper. Thankfully I read the reviews earlier making this and just added 1 teaspoon of red pepper and it was still too hot for the kids to consume! We similar spicy foods, but even cutting down the corporeality of pepper it was still spicy. The taste was a great combination. And it was such a quick recipe to make. I Volition make it over again, but only add a pinch of ruby pepper.
02/05/2003
Squeamish flavour and soooo easy. My hubby loves bierrocks and these are alot similar them with less bread. I used Peppys Pita Bread because I had no pita pockets in the house. Some folks may find this filling a little rich with and then much sausage, I cutting the richness by using one-half ground beef with half sausage. Thanks Holly.
04/08/2002
Very unproblematic recipe. It turned out neat. Thank you
08/07/2001
We certain love this one! My oldest girl loved it then much that she fabricated it for her boyfriend and he asked for a re-create of the recipe. Thank you Holly!
09/22/2001
Great recipe. Goes groovy with venison sausage. I have already passed this recipe on to two others.
01/18/2003
This was so like shooting fish in a barrel to make and super tasty. Information technology didn't sog up the pita staff of life similar I thought information technology might which is good. Didn't use as much crushed pepper, first with a niggling and so suit or you'll be LIT Upwards!
10/04/2002
Great flavor and easy to brand. Good for a different dinner dish.
05/13/2003
Very practiced and unique taste! I used 1 lb of regular pork sausage and i/2 of maple pork sausage. Once mixed together, the combo produced a very nice, subtle sweet gustation! Also, I used a pkg of colesalw cabbage and less red pepper flakes. I was skeptical about the sour cream merely it actually brings this dish together! Served in "Peppy's Pita Bread" from this site and the manner these were devoured, I'd wager that luncheon was a hit! Thanks for the neat idea Holly!

very easy to make and economical!
xi/02/2010
I freakin' dearest these things! I, too, utilized the pre-shredded "cole slaw" cabbage as I was in one of those "I need to make dinner simply I besides don't need to put in a lot of effort - or dingy a lot of dishes - to brand said dinner happen." I also used half regular sausage and one-half ground beef, per another reviewers' suggestions. I recall the mixture is great by itself, but I think the bread makes it. The not-profoundly-stocked grocery shop I run to by work for emergencies didn't have pita bread, so I used some apartment bread instead. My husband had his doubts, but then couldn't resist stealing a seize with teeth of mine when I wasn't looking. He is now a convert and this volition be in my "feeling kinda lazy just not lazy plenty to call the pizza guys" recipe file. Thank you!
12/14/2010
MUCH better than I expected actually! Even my picky eater liked it!
09/23/2010
Excellent Dish. As other recommended, nosotros ate this with potatoes, but I am excited about trying it out tomorrow in a Pita. Information technology had a trivial kick to it, but my kids, who don't like spicey food, ate information technology with no complaints. Wouldn't alter anything and volition definitely practice again.
10/26/2010
This was adept, only we ended upwardly using honey on information technology at the tabular array to make it one ameliorate. Thank you for an interesting take. We usually used chicken and stir fry veggies to fill up our pitas.
03/19/2010
My married man loved it. Me, not and so much. I've never been a big fan of ground sausage anyway. To many conflicting flavors I thought. It needs a lot more cabbage. I give it three stars because of how much my husband enjoyed it.
01/18/2011
My hubby and teen son really liked it. I idea it was okay but I'one thousand not into spicy foods only would recommend information technology had good flavor and it was like shooting fish in a barrel to brand
08/21/2009
This was smashing just skipped the pita and served with potatos.
08/07/2010
Outstanding!
08/31/2009
I really enjoyed this dish. I reduced the crushed red pepper to ane tsp and information technology notwithstanding had plenty of kick. I also used one lb. of mild breakfast sausage and a bag of coleslaw mix. I'l make ths one again for sure!
05/05/2009
Personally, I give it 5 stars for flavor, only the rest of the family was very unimpressed. Scaled the recipe to 4 servings which allowed me to use 1 lb sausage and one purse of prepackaged cole slaw. I cut the crimson pepper flakes in one-half and very glad I did - nevertheless pretty spicy, but perfect for my taste. I thought the filling was and then skillful that the pita was unnecessary - I enjoyed information technology every bit a one skillet meal.
10/thirteen/2009
It was pretty good, if you similar cabbage and pork. Simply the pita was non-sequitar. Information technology added nix to the repast.
06/23/2010
Absolutely delicious! My hubby said that the filling office of this recipe was one of the most delightful things he had ever put in his mouth. Nosotros don't utilize white sugar around our business firm (mostly apply brown or raw), and so I used brownish in identify of white carbohydrate. Other than that, I followed the recipe as written.
01/31/2009
Personally, I didn't retrieve it had much season besides the heat in the red pepper flakes. I did utilize turkey sausage and low fat sour foam, maybe it would exist better with the fully loaded stuff. Thanks for sharing though!!
01/24/2009
This was surprisingly - really, really good! Wow, it makes a lot. And, it'southward extremely filling - we had leftovers for days. I may freeze some of it next fourth dimension, because information technology can get old. I'll definitely be keeping this recipe!
04/27/2010
pretty good
06/09/2006
My whole family unit loved this! 4 stars because I personally think it needed tweeking: I used a ane lb. tube of regular Jimmy Dean sausage, then 1 minor head of cabbage, 2 small onions, and instead of the sugar, cerise pepper, and salt, I used seasoned salt to gustatory modality. I concluded upward using 1/two cup sour cream. We volition make once again.
03/07/2011
Having this for lunch today. Really good. I used homemade turkey sausage and instead of pita bread, I used a whole wheat tortilla.. fabricated a batch, popped them in the freezer and just nuked 1 at piece of work for lunch. I like the sweetness/spicy combo with the sour cream.. really different
04/15/2011
Yous can make this dish a trivial lower in fat, yet with just as much season past using turkey sausage or footing seasoned turkey. I generally dislike cabbage, but the beginning fourth dimension I made this recipe we loved information technology and then much that we had the dinner leftovers for breakfast. Unless you like your pitas huge, this recipe makes closer to 8 servings. Scarlet pepper flakes add some needed colour.
09/22/2010
I had a head of cabbage from the garden & pound of pork sausage I needed to utilise, so I thought this looked like a uncomplicated solution. It was! The simply affair that was even remotely "hard" was the endeavour in grating the cabbage--maybe 7 minutes. The outset bite was alright & and then it just seemed to get better & better with each bite! We used the new Globe Grains "Thin Buns" instead of pitas, simply used halves & kind of wrapped them around the "filling" like a pita--fantastic!
06/01/2008
This was succulent, fast, and like shooting fish in a barrel. We didn't have pita bread then we but used toast and it was still yummy. We also added nigh a 1/iv cup more than sour cream.
08/04/2011
This made a ton. Will probably cutting the recipe downwardly next time. Overall good.
08/09/2010
Definitely use less blood-red pepper, as many suggested! I used around i - 1.5 tsp; and it was perfect. Since I have a few in my family that are not crazy about onions, I used green onion (chives) instead. My entire family unit loved this recipe, fifty-fifty the ones who don't normally like cabbage!
11/24/2002
Very easy and tasty!! We have also tried it without the sausage to cutting downward on cholestrol, still very good!!!
04/28/2009
Wow...I just finished cooking this upwardly, and although I haven't put information technology all together notwithstanding, the cabbage and sausage individually gustatory modality great! Together, I can only imagine how wonderful they will go together! (I'1000 only waiting for my married man to get home with the pitas and so we can eat!) The only things I tweaked was using hot italian sausage and add some maple syrup when browing the meat. Delicious recipe! Thanks for sharing! (Gauge we'll meet what my biggest critics think!)
07/19/2001
Very good and very piece of cake!
07/16/2001
My husband and I dear this recipe. Very easy and very good. Nosotros always make some extra and so that we tin can pack it for lunch the adjacent day.
02/21/2008
These were really good, something different. I did jazz it up a trivial to suit our tastes - simply non too much, it's a nice simple dish. Thanks for the recipe - I never really think about pita, and at present I will!
07/20/2001
Thanks for the corking recipe Holly. We dear information technology!
10/27/2011
Delicious! I used sweet Italian pork sausage and cut the pepper flakes back to 1/4 tsp. So uncomplicated and Then Good.
01/06/2012
Loved this I am a cabbage lover! Fifty-fifty my young children loved it and they are very picky eaters. Great recipe!
02/24/2007
my husband loved it. didnt think information technology was too spicy and used exact measurements. husband said even though full he wanted to keep eating for season. i am less into spicy and i nevertheless idea a tablespoon of crimson pepper was fine, though mouth was hot. he suggested left over i add together shrimp and shaved carrot and brand bootleg eggrolls. we had a lot of left over with iv eating. i will half recipe next time.
08/22/2006
We LOVED this recipe! I cut back on the red pepper a fleck and used a bagged coleslaw mix. Only took x minutes to cook the cabbage down. Sour cream was excellent, stirred in. Had to button the married man away from the stove, he was eating out of the skillet. Pita bread was a nice change. Will have these again and again.
11/thirteen/2011
Very expert! I used plain white precut pitas and was impressed with the season. I didnt modify a thing. Thanks for a great, fast recipe.
08/26/2006
Very piece of cake and actually adept. Added fresh garlic. Whole family unit loved this!
12/11/2003
My family loved the recipe and I volition definitely make information technology again. It was filling and had that wholesome homemade feel. It is spicy, but most of the family unit liked that. For those who didn't, they just added more sourcream to their pitas and loved it. I probably will add less red pepper adjacent time just to sense of humor my sister who likes things super bland. :-) Neat recipe!
04/15/2006
I used hot italian sausage, and later on reading the other reviews, just added i teaspoon of ruby-red pepper flakes. I added brown deli mustard to the pitas, and served with kettle chips. Absolute heaven. Thanks, Holly!
07/xvi/2001
This recipe is the best tasting and easiest recipe I've prepared in a long time. It's a dandy meal in itself. I've made it three times and my dinner guests are e'er complimenting me on it.
09/04/2004
First-class recipe! I shared it with several of my co-workers and we make it on a regular footing!! Piece of cake to do, ingredients simple to discover!
09/25/2006
Very good but cut downward the red pepper flakes past at least half if you don't desire your mouth to burn down. I didn't cutting it downward plenty & my rima oris was on fire! I had to drink a lot of milk & I added actress sour cream to my pita to assist with the called-for in my mouth. I used mild sweet Italian sausage. Thanks,
07/23/2006
I really enjoyed these!!! I didn't change the recipe at all!
02/xvi/2006
I was so surprised at how well this went over with the cabbage-haters in my family unit. It'due south oftentimes requested and considering it'due south inexpensive, filling and very good, I go far frequently.
01/21/2007
My husband and I made this tonight for dinner and idea information technology was quite good. I am not a huge fan of sausage so we used 1 lb spicy basis sausage mixed with 1/2 lb ground beef. Based on previous reviews we used just 1 teaspoon red pepper. We idea it came out tasty without being at all spicy (we volition use more red pepper in the futurity). We as well used bagged coleslaw mix. Nosotros did find that the sausage/cabbage mix was a bit runny and we will try draining the cabbage after wilting next time to meet if information technology helps. Nosotros likewise used gyro breadstuff (and spread dijon mustard on the bread). This is a skillful recipe to effort if you are looking for something quick and dissimilar. Thanks for sharing information technology with us.
01/22/2008
I dear this! I also cut the pepper in half. I institute this recipe when I fabricated pita bread using Peppys pita bread recipe found hither too!
07/30/2007
This is a really quick repast to whip up and delicious too. I gave it 5 stars for ease in training and season. I have made it with mild pork sausage a couple of times. Once, to make it a little healthier I used turkey sausage, which did not take as much flavor. No thing which sausage I used, I found it had a lot of spice with the pepper...I just need to remember to back off the hot pepper next time. Whew! It was a little bit too spicy, but darn it, these were addictive!!! The sour cream balanced the spiciness, then that was a relief! Try this recipe, you won't be disappointed.
08/xix/2007
I liked it, my husband didn't. I didn't similar it every bit much when I tried to eat information technology without the pita. Is that weird? Somehow the pita fabricated it all work for me! :)
08/20/2006
The first time I made this, I followed the recipe, but used a petty less red pepper (to play it safe). It tasted besides much like the pork breakfast sausage, but we nevertheless enjoyed it. Just, I found a elementary tweak that made the flavor better balanced, more Mediterranean-like, and not so strongly tasting of breakfast sausage. I just used 1 12 oz. tube of Jimmy Dean Depression-Fat sausage and 12 oz. of ground lamb. It's healthier, and I call up it's tastier. Thanks for the recipe!
x/29/2005
Loved this at the time it was printed and fabricated it many times. However other foods came along and I had lost my recipe. took some time to find it in my Allrecipe box. I made 3 copies and will put in different places. Won't get lost again!!!!
x/11/2006
Okay... so I listened to past posters and used a hot sausage. Big mistake. The pepper in the recipe is enough! Information technology was so hot we couldn't even cease the meal. Just I'm giving information technology 4 stars because it really is a good dish! Dissimilar flavor but easy to eat. Pork Sausage isn't just for breakfest. Will make again in information technology'south original recipe class.
09/06/2007
This recipe was fabbbbbbulosss!!!I made it for my family unit nd they loved it!!And we don't really even care like cabbage or sausage..merely nosotros wanted something unlike so we tried it..i will defenitely make this again!!(oh i wanted to accept the advice of i of the other users..to add one regular sausage and one maple but i didn't take whatsoever so i added about 2tbsp off maple syrup..fantastic!!!
02/03/2004
I attempted to catechumen this to a low-fat recipe by using turkey sausage and light sour cream. I exercise this with many recipes and it usually works out fine. Perhaps information technology was considering of my modifications, but this recipe didn't do anything for me. Information technology was only okay. We ate information technology, simply I don't think I'll attempt to make it again.
03/01/2004
It was really good. I agree with another who said it had that homemade taste. I wasnt certain how it would taste just we enjoyed it. Its a keeper.
10/31/2007
My husband and I both enjoyed this recipe. I make my ain Italian sausage using the "Hot Italian Sausage" recipe from Jim Wyllie that is posted on this site. That'southward an first-class recipe. I merely scale it downwardly to 1 pound of sausage since the original recipe makes twenty pounds. The only thing I would change about this recipe is utilise less cherry pepper flakes. 1 Tablespoon was too much fifty-fifty though we like spicy foods. It meant the main season was hot. It'due south actually tasty and so you want to gustatory modality the other flavors. It's very quick and easy for supper.
12/xv/2003
Quick and very easy and the function--delicious!
06/03/2006
Splendid recipe. If I cut down slightly on the pepper next time, my picky-eater children would even give information technology 5 stars. Will exist added to the rotation - thanks!!
06/fourteen/2006
Divya
07/x/2012
These were surprisingly yummy. Simply the pepper, oh the pepper!! I tin't give it more than stars because the recipe as written has enough pepper to burn your mouth off. I like spicy food, just ugh, this was besides much!
01/26/2004
1 teaspoon of crushed cherry pepper was enough hot plenty for us. These have a unique flavor and were adept. Simply not quite a five star,in our opinion.
09/21/2007
This is a great recipe! Seems strange until you try it merely it has become a staple repast in our house. I utilize turkey sausage and it tastes great.
08/06/2005
These are great.I've made this several times since I institute this recipe.Just brand sure and use a practiced quality sausage. I thought the spiciness was simply right. This recipe is worthy of my recipe binder.
12/29/2013
OMG I am and then happy I re-establish this recipe! I had made information technology about a year ago and it was delish! Bf and I were looking to make it again merely couldn't find this verbal recipe, and the replacement was nowhere nearly as yummy :/ But this is fun and easy to make, and reminds me of tastes from habitation...can't wait to arrive again!
05/19/2004
We used spicy italian sausage and plenty of ruby-red pepper. Very expert - my hubby likes cabbage and loved this.
12/ten/2003
What a wonderful recipe! Quick and simple is exactly right. Nosotros don't like spicy and then the red pepper wasn't added, that was the simply change I made. Next fourth dimension I will endeavour calculation a small-scale diced potato. The sauce was a wonderful surprise. I will be making this again and once more. Thank-you lot for submitting this recipe Holly!
03/15/2004
My husband was the only 1 who liked this recipie. I did non intendance for the taste at all. I might attempt this again using hot italian sausage, only in my opinion it simply tasted too "weird" with regular pork sausage. Cheers anyway!
12/09/2003
Holly, I thought your receipe was only great. I used turkey sausage instead of pork, used Splenda instead of "real" sugar and used but 1/ii tsp. of the red pepper flakes. The turkey sausage was likewise loftier in cholestral, only felt it would take away from your recipe if I didn't use whatever at all. Going to electronic mail this to my girl who is on the Atkins diet.
11/16/2004
This was soooo good!!! & and then easy to make! Since my boyfriend doesn't care for spicy foods, I cut the pepper content in half; it still was pretty hot so next time I'll omit the pepper. He said other than that he also actually liked it & he is non easy to please! We look frontwards to having this regularly! Thank you!
03/xix/2013
I made this for the first time and volition definitely be making it again. I followed the recipe exactly, and I loved it. After I tasted it, I immediately fabricated some gyro cucumber sauce to get with it. Letting the sauce chill for 2 hours was the longest look e'er, but so worth it. I can't wait for tiffin tomorrow so I can eat it again.
01/22/2004
I loved it! I used a teaspoon of blood-red pepper and information technology was only spicy enough. I had information technology on a hard ringlet with mustard and it was delicious. I will definitely make this again!
12/09/2003
This was interesting. I'd simply received an e-mail saying how good cabbage is for you lot, so I thought I'd requite it a try. I added some poultry seasoning and a nuance of mustard. The combo of the sausage and sugar made it have a tasty sweetness. My 7 year sometime refused to even try information technology. My eight year old tried information technology but that was it. My married man ate a double serving PLUS the kids uneaten food. AND he'south taking the leftovers for lunch today. To each their ain, I guess!
01/15/2004
Delicious and very easy!
07/29/2012
I modified and made into dough pockets instead with cheddar cheese. Added paprika. Very flavorful with sour cream.
12/26/2018
Didn't intendance for this dish very much. I thought it was pretty banal, really. The boyfriend ate it with ketchup on top.
03/25/2019
This is a great recipe, uncomplicated and yummy. I didn't have any pita so I used street taco four tortillas. I toned down the red pepper flakes.
12/02/2013
These were fantastic. I merely used 1 tsp blood-red pepper.
11/thirty/2012
Savory, sweet, and a fleck spicy. Bully combination of flavors, though I would subtract the sugar next time.
02/16/2020
I've made this a few times and love information technology. I simply reduce the red pepper to 1 tsp and instead of pitas I go with tortillas in a panini press.
01/27/2014
My swain and I absolutely loved this recipe! I was very quick and easy to make, and delicious. Great every bit leftovers, too. It is quite spicy (we dearest spicy), so you may want to cut back on the pepper flakes if y'all don't like as much kick. Will make again and again!
01/21/2016
Very practiced! I have made this two weeks in a row now! Did only use 1 tsp of crushed red pepper and information technology was enough hot for my taste.
12/23/2014
wow! so unproblematic and like shooting fish in a barrel! I honey it and then does my house guests. balling on a budget washed proper! cheers
06/18/2014
Admittedly fantastic. Simply apply ane tablespoon red pepper flakes.
11/06/2015
Love the flavor of this dish! I require it about 5 times a year! Information technology's hearty and warm…and a great manner to utilise cabbage in a flavorful mode. I made the recipe as is – if yous know yous don't care for too much crushed red pepper head….just apply less…pretty elementary. Cheers for the recipe Holly!
ten/21/2017
I left out the onions, only because my family unit won't eat them, this is one of my family unit favs...my grandson asks for this every weekend
03/30/2022
Reminds me a lot of Bierokis or a Runza. Called em Pocket Runzas and fed it to my married woman who is an Omaha Native. Just tucked a piece of cheese into each pocket and she loved it. If you know a Runza, you lot become it!
03/xx/2021
I've made this recipe, equally is, a few times. Information technology's delicious! I utilise wraps, as they're easier to observe, and in more variety, than pitas. The last time I fabricated them, I made them ahead of time, and then reheated in the air fryer. Perfect!
09/09/2013
My six year old said "This is corking!" Quite a rave review for cabbage.
07/29/2014
Delicious! I'm glad I didn't use the 1 Tbsp of crushed red pepper. I just used ½ tsp and information technology had a expert medium-hot rut to it. I too used about ½ lb of lean ground beefiness with 1 lb pork sausage and tortillas instead of pita since that'south what I had on hand. For a skeptical husband when he saw the recipe, he said to get in again and perchance fifty-fifty try some apple tree in it!
06/28/2015
This recipe was crawly minus the saccharide. There'southward no need to add together sugar. I will definitely make this again.
08/02/2021
I wasn't sure either - when I read the ingredients it sounded kind of bland. We accept local pork sausage, and cabbage, onion, and cayenne pepper from our garden to utilize, so it was a please! We didn't have pita bread, just nosotros had uncooked tortillas that nosotros heated/cooked up, and they were perfect. Nosotros will brand once again.
02/thirteen/2016
Anybody in my family enjoyed this recipe. For convienence, I used a package of cole slaw. Since I was servng this on a plate rather than in a pita, i omitted the sour cream. Equally others suggested, Iserved this with potatoes. WARNING: The cooked cabbage left a terrible smell in the house! Nex time, I will melt this exterior on the grill side burner.
